Online Charging System (OCS) & Converged Charging

The Online Charging System (OCS) is the real-time monetization engine of a telecom operator's Business Support System (BSS). It controls subscriber usage, enforces credit limits, and performs real-time rating and charging of services such as voice, SMS, data, roaming, and digital services.

With the evolution from 2G/3G prepaid charging to 5G digital monetization, our OCS platform is evolving into Converged Charging Systems (CCS) supporting prepaid and postpaid services, multiple network technologies (2G–5G), digital services and APIs, and IoT and enterprise connectivity.

Role of OCS in Telecom Network Architecture

OCS Architecture Diagram

The OCS performs real-time credit authorization, allowing or blocking services depending on the user's balance.

Core Functionalities of Gensparc Next-Generation OCS

Real-Time Charging and Rating
  • Real-time rating of voice, data, SMS, and roaming
  • Event-based and session-based charging
  • Balance reservation and deduction
  • Quota management for prepaid subscribers

Real-time charging ensures services are billed instantly and prevents overspending or revenue leakage.

Subscriber Balance and Wallet Management

A next-generation OCS manages multiple wallets: monetary balance, data quota, voice minutes, promotional balances, and loyalty points. It also supports notifications when balance thresholds are reached.

Policy-Based Charging Integration

The charging platform integrates with PCRF/PCF policy engines to enforce service policies — throttling speed when data quota expires, charging premium rates for high QoS traffic, and applying different tariffs based on location or network slice.

Converged Charging and Billing

Modern converged platforms unify charging for prepaid, postpaid, enterprise billing, IoT devices, and partner services — enabling any network type, payment model, or customer segment on a single platform.

Key Features of Next-Generation Converged Charging

Multi-Network Support
  • 2G / 3G voice services
  • 4G VoLTE data sessions
  • 5G SA and NSA services
  • IoT connectivity
  • Enterprise private networks
Flexible Pricing Models
  • Usage-based pricing
  • Subscription plans
  • Tiered data plans
  • Dynamic pricing
  • Service bundles

Charging engine supports complex real-time pricing based on multiple parameters and attributes.

Multi-Service Charging

Converged systems charge for voice, messaging, data, digital services, APIs, OTT partnerships, and IoT devices.

5G Charging and Monetization Capabilities

With 5G, the Gensparc OCS is evolving into the Charging Function (CHF) within the 5G core architecture.

  • Network Slice Charging: Charge based on latency SLA, bandwidth, service type, and enterprise slice subscription
  • API Monetization: Monetize network APIs, location services, and QoS on demand
  • Edge Charging: Operate at MEC edge nodes to support low-latency services

Cloud-Native OCS Architecture

Our next-generation charging platform is built for telco cloud environments featuring microservices architecture, Kubernetes deployment, containerized VNFs, horizontal scaling, and high availability clusters. The cloud-based OCS provides elastic scaling and distributed deployment across infrastructure layers.

AI and Analytics in Gensparc Charging Platform

AI-Based Customer Personalization

AI engine analyzes usage behavior and recommends personalized data bundles, contextual promotions, and real-time upsell offers.

Fraud and Revenue Assurance

AI model detects abnormal usage patterns, SIM box fraud, roaming fraud, and subscription abuse.

Dynamic Pricing Optimization

AI engine analyzes network congestion, subscriber behavior, and service demand to automatically adjust tariffs and pricing plans.

Customer Experience Analytics

The charging system analyzes subscriber usage trends, application consumption patterns, and QoE metrics to help operators optimize service packages.

AI Roadmap

  • Autonomous Charging: AI-based real-time tariff optimization, automated service pricing, and predictive revenue modeling
  • Intent-Based Monetization: Dynamically create service offers based on subscriber intent, application usage patterns, and network context

API Monetization
  • Location services and network analytics
  • QoS on-demand APIs
  • Partner and OTT revenue sharing

5G Charging Function (CHF)

The Charging Function (CHF) is a key component of the 5G Core network monetization architecture. It replaces the traditional OCS and OFCS used in 4G and earlier networks by providing converged charging for both real-time and offline billing in a cloud-native environment. In the 5G Service-Based Architecture (SBA), the CHF acts as a centralized charging service that other network functions can invoke using standardized APIs.

5G Charging Architecture

5G CHF Architecture Diagram

Key Components of 5G Converged Charging

  • Charging Function (CHF): Central function for charging request processing, event collection, and charging control
  • Rating Function (RF): Applies tariffs — per GB pricing, per-minute voice charging, QoS-based pricing
  • Account and Balance Management Function (ABMF): Manages monetary balance, data quotas, and enterprise account balances
  • Charging Gateway Function (CGF): Aggregates charging records and forwards them to the billing system

Key Features of 5G CHF

  • Converged online and offline charging in a unified platform
  • Real-time authorization for network usage via quota management
  • Network slice charging based on slice ID, service type, QoS level, and enterprise SLA
  • Multi-service charging: voice (VoNR), data, messaging, IoT, APIs, and enterprise services
  • REST-based Nchf interface replacing legacy Diameter protocol
  • Cloud-native deployment with Kubernetes and horizontal scaling

Future Roadmap: AI-Driven Charging

  • AI-Based Dynamic Pricing: Adjust tariffs based on network congestion, demand patterns, and service performance
  • Fraud and Abuse Detection: AI models detect abnormal usage, subscription abuse, and roaming fraud
  • Predictive Revenue Optimization: AI analyzes network usage to recommend optimized pricing plans and personalized offers
